Objectives of PM KUSUM Yojana

A few of the key objectives of this scheme are as follows;

  1. To provide water and economic stability to the farmers.
  2. To enhance the income of the farmers while improving their lifestyle.
  3. To help the farmers, reduce their reliance on grid-connected areas.
  4. To have solar power production in unproductive areas.

Components of PM KUSUM Yojana

The PM KUSUM Yojana was introduced back in 2019, with the following components.

Component A

The initial component is all about introducing a 10,000 MW decentralized grid-connected renewable energy power plant on a barren piece of land. This component deals with setting up renewable energy power plants. This will be done by the panchayats/ farmers or a group of farmers/ Water User Associations (WUA), etc.

Furthermore, the renewable power plants that have been installed will be such that they are capable of growing crops below the solar panels. Moreover, this power that will be generated via the solar panels will be majorly purchased at local rates by the DISCOM.

Component B

This is the second component, which is primarily focused on installing approximately 17.5 lac solar agricultural pumps. Here, assistance and guidance will be provided to the individual farmers for installing these agricultural pumps having a capacity of 7.5 HP. The motive behind the installation of these pumps is to replace them with the traditional systems of irrigation.

Component C

This is the final component of the PM KUSUM Yojana and is focused on the solarisation of a 10 lac grid that is linked with the agricultural pumps. This component will assist the individual farmers who already have agricultural pumps. After this component, the farmers will be capable of using the solar power generated to meet their irrigation requirements. The leftover or the additional solar power will again be sold at local rates.

Overall, it would be noteworthy to state that the solar subsidy Yojana provides a major relief to the farmers.

Expected Improvements via the PM KUSUM Yojana

Below mentioned are some of the improvements that can be expected from the PM KUSUM Yojana.

Reliable power supply for irrigation purposes

Traditionally, farmers used to irrigate their lands only during the night time due to the limited power source. This not only resulted in major inconvenience for them but also led to wastage of water because the pumps were switched on the whole night. However, with the help of solar panels via the PM KUSUM Yojana, the irrigation process can be much better for the farmers as it will avoid wastage of both energy and water.

Reduction in the Import Bill

The implementation of the PM KUSUM Yojana in India will result in a reduction of the overall import bill because it will reduce the consumption of diesel by 1.38 billion liters per annum. This suggests that the scheme is going to benefit, not only the farmers but the overall economy.

De-dieselization

This is one of the most vital improvements that can be anticipated via this scheme. This is because farmers have been waiting for the diesel pumps to be replaced by electrical pumps due to their expensive nature. Therefore, the KUSUM Yojana will replace the traditional pumps with electrical pumps and solar panels. This will further help the Indian farmers to have a reliable irrigation system, which is cost-effective.

Mitigation of Climate Change

The PM Kusum solar subsidy scheme will set up approximately 80 lakh agricultural pumps in the meantime. This will result in a major reduction of harmful carbon emissions by around 32 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per annum. Therefore, it can be stated that the replacement of traditional pumps via solar panels and electrical pumps will result in reduced air pollution as well which will be a stepping stone to effectively combat climate change.
